Polstead St Mary

Polstead St Mary

Up on a hill with sweeping views over the Box valley, this is one of Suffolk’s best Norman churches as you will see inside from the nave arcades and rare brick arches. Traces of Roman building material are thought to have come from the ruined villa next to the churchyard. The site goes back to St Cedd’s legendary preaching under the Gospel Oak, in the grounds of Polstead Hall, circa AD 653.
